Repowering presents a strategic opportunity to enhance the value and
better manage existing assets. Whether you are an owner, purchaser or
financier SOAPP-REPO can facilitate the valuation of assets and
development of strategies to refocus those units that are "on the
margin" in today's competitive market. SOAPP-REPO integrates process design, costing, and financial analysis of combined
cycle repowering of existing fossil steam plants. This interactive
software product supports the analysis of repowering existing coal, oil,
or gas-fired boilers with combustion turbines and heat recovery steam
generators.
You first establish a reuse plan for the steam turbines, feedwater
heaters, and balance-of-plant equipment and enter critical data for the
existing steam cycle and reused equipment. You then specify the repowered
plant by selecting a combustion turbine model and the other major new
equipment and inputting some key unit, site, fuel, and economic data. The
WorkStation then configures the repowered plant, sizes and costs the new
equipment, and performs detailed performance and financial analyses of the
resulting conceptual design.
How can SOAPP help?
Decisions involving electricity generation are no longer technical
issues with engineering answers. These decisions are interdisciplinary
issues requiring technical, cost and financial data. SOAPP-REPO was designed from the beginning to support valuation of
existing assets and establishing strategic project goals for combined
cycle repowering of existing fossil steam units, including the development
of conceptual designs. Project costing and financial evaluation were not
after-thoughts, patched on at the end. The WorkStation integrates
technical and financial analysis in one product that fully automates many
labor-intensive tasks. This frees you to focus on the critical issues that
define a successful project in a competitive market place. Significant
opportunities for reducing generating costs, increasing net income, and
reducing risks are left untapped in many projects. The complex, often
hidden, interaction of site conditions, economic and market factors, and
financial strategies with equipment, process, and plant design create
these possibilities. Your key to uncovering these hidden opportunities
lies in using the SOAPP-REPO Combined Cycle Repowering WorkStation to evaluate a wide variety of
equipment choices and design criteria over the range of expected economic,
market, and financial conditions.
You can use plant conceptual designs created with SOAPP-REPO to evaluate project feasibility and strategies, to support
financial decisions or technology selections, to aid in strategic
planning, and as the starting point for bid specifications and final
design.
Major Product Features
Version 3.0 of the SOAPP-REPO Combined Cycle Repowering WorkStation features up-to-date cost
and performance information, and new
features that expand the software's capabilities and enable users to more
thoroughly evaluate potential combined cycle repowering scenarios.

- Multiple Steam Cycle Configurations
Up to three HP feedwater heaters, four LP heaters, and one
deaerator can be included in a repowered cycle configuration, enabling
you to explore relative performance and economic effects of retaining
or removing feedwater heaters. In addition, the enhanced heat balance
allows more accurate control over extraction rates and duct burner
calculations.
- Steam Turbine Advisor
This Advisor helps you quickly explore the feasibility of
several alternate steam turbine configuration and performance
scenarios and assists you by entering the appropriate data into the
WorkStation. The Advisor integrates steam turbine design calculations,
qualitative assessment, and historical information to profile the
existing steam turbine and address allowable and suggested last row
blade loading limits, performance sensitivity analysis of closing off
extractions and/or changing throttle flow, and economic ranking of
possible options.
- Condenser Advisor
This Advisor integrates condenser design calculations,
qualitative assessment, and historical information to profile the
existing condenser system and then addresses the effects of tube
condition, tube surface area, tube material, circulating water flow
rate, and heat rejection system on back pressure/ performance and
economics. Using this Advisor, you can explore alternate condenser
configurations and performance scenarios, decide on the most promising
option, and have the appropriate data entered into the WorkStation.
- Combustion Turbine Advisor
This Advisor helps you identify combustion turbine models
that are most likely to fit the repowering conceptual design energy
balance. The latest performance, emissions, and cost data, made
available by the manufacturers for over 100 combustion turbine models,
including both 50 Hz and 60 Hz machines.
Analysis Capabilities
The analyses performed by the SOAPP-REPO Combined Cycle Repowering WorkStation are completely
integrated. You input basic process information on the existing plant, new
equipment selections, key design criteria and other project site and
economic information, and the WorkStation validates your inputs,
configures all process connections, and performs heat and material
balances. The heat balance calculations perform an entire unit heat and
material balance and determine flows, state point conditions at each
connection port of each component, and the power output of the generating
unit. The WorkStation uses this information to size new plant equipment,
using algorithms derived from design practice and manufacturers' data.
Plant construction cost estimates are developed by the WorkStation from
equipment cost estimates correlated to the sizing information. O&M and
fuel cost estimates are in turn derived from the preceding results and
additional correlations. Finally, the WorkStation performs a financial
analysis using the completed conceptual design information.
You can choose to have the WorkStation generate any or all of the
following conceptual design deliverables:
- Design criteria
- Equipment reuse plan
- Heat balance
- Performance and emissions summaries
- Equipment list (includes sizing)
- Process flow and piping diagrams
- General arrangement drawings
- Capital cost estimates
- O&M cost estimates
- Financial analysis
In addition to the standard reports generated by SOAPP-REPO, the
drawings can be exported as AutoCad compatible files, and all other
reports can be either exported as delimited text files or "copied and
pasted" into other programs for additional analysis or reporting.
The SOAPP family of interactive software products provides you with
information on current power plant technologies and enables you to quickly
create unique, detailed, project-specific plant conceptual designs.
Comprehensive process and equipment models, combined with sophisticated,
embedded engineering expertise enable the SOAPP software to make
engineering decisions automatically, freeing you to concentrate on only
the most critical process, equipment, and design criteria selections.
SOAPP software helps you target project design simultaneously to project
financial requirements, market and site conditions, and fuel and
consumable prices. |
